Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Manager I (ITM I) of Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) in the Office of Information Services (OIS), the incumbent performs managing, coordination, technical consulting and support over the full range of server and software activities involving DIR’s complex IT Operation and Cloud operations environment. Develops and maintains the IT system operating schedules and analyzes for efficiency. Authorizes and directs changes to the operational parameters. Oversees and monitors daily work and performance of IT staff. Responsible for IT operations environment documentation and reporting. Consults with senior management to ensure strategic goals are met. Oversees daily operations of data backups, verification, and recovery, ensuring successful completion and integrity, while also managing server file space to meet the department's storage needs.

Working Conditions

There is only one position that may be filled in either Oakland or Sacramento. If you are interested in the position at more than one location, please submit a separate application for each job control.

The incumbent performs work in an open-spaced, partitioned office environment with an assigned cubicle in Sacramento, CA. The office is climate-controlled with natural and artificial light. The incumbent will utilize the computer daily. DIR is currently in a hybrid telework schedule and Incumbent will be required to work on site two days a week. The incumbent will be a participant in meetings in both physical and virtual locations. E.g. conference rooms and offices, and WebEx and Zoom teleconferences.

  1. Describe your experience leading a team responsible for the management and maintenance of IT infrastructure, including both on-premises and cloud environments. Provide specific examples of how you ensured the availability, security, and reliability of these systems. Highlight your experience with server management, network equipment, and software applications.
  2. Describe your experience in developing and implementing backup and disaster recovery strategies. Explain how you ensured high availability and disaster recovery readiness. Include specific examples where possible.
  3. Describe your experience with ensuring IT systems comply with relevant policies and standards. Provide examples of how you have conducted technical reviews and analyses of IT systems to ensure compliance and or/how you have addressed audit findings.
  4. Based on your experience, how has implementing and utilizing Infrastructure as Code impacted your ability to manage and maintain IT infrastructure? Provide specific examples of situations where IaC significantly improved efficiency, consistency, or security.

This position requires the IT Supervisor II to maintain acceptable, consistent and regular attendance at such level as is determined at the department’s sole discretion; Must be regularly available and willing to work the hours the department determines necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

The incumbent will lead, supervise, and mentor a team of IT specialists, ensuring efficient operations and fostering a collaborative work environment.

The IT Supervisor II effectively communicates appropriately when dealing with the public and/or other employees of the department; develop and maintain knowledge and skills related to specific tasks, methodologies, materials, tools, and equipment; complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner; shall attend all required trainings and meetings as assigned, and adhere to departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, leave, and conduct.

Invests in personal development through certification or continuous education to maintain position related knowledge in the information technology field with the emphasis in infrastructure services. The incumbent will also focus on promoting and advocating the foundational information system principles of confidentiality, integrity, and availability throughout the DIR.

  • Possess expertise in software applications such as ServiceNow and other tools including word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and reporting tools, to support business operations and productivity.
  • Understanding of industry standards, data privacy regulations, and compliance requirements to implement best practices.
  • Keep up to date with emerging trends and best practices in the technology and communications industries and evaluate their potential impact on the organization's IT strategy and operations.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, rules, and regulations, as well as town policies and procedures, related to IT operations, data privacy, security, and ethics, and ensure compliance with them.
  • Knowledge of end-to-end Software Development Life Cycle.
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies including the traditional waterfall method and the Agile method.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Integration/Deployment (CI/CD) concepts and tools such as IBM Rational Team Concert, GitHub, Ant, Maven and Hudson/Jenkins.
  • Knowledge of software security best practices, security flaw identification, mitigation and correction.
  • Knowledge of AI, machine learning, cloud-based platforms and other emerging technologies preferred.
