Who we are looking for: Slate is seeking a skilled Senior Packaging Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of packaging solutions for automotive components and materials. This role focuses on creating cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient packaging systems that enhance supply chain performance and minimize waste.
What you get to do: - Design and implement packaging solutions for automotive components, materials, and finished goods, ensuring compliance with logistics, storage, safety, and durability standards.
- Engage with manufacturing, quality, and design teams to identify part candidates for returnable packaging that meet part integrity and quality requirements during shipment and storage.
- Forecast and manage packaging budgets and cost-saving initiatives.
- Develop sustainable, reusable, and returnable packaging solutions using 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for design and simulation.
- Collaborate with production part suppliers to develop durable, cost-effective expendable packaging that protects part quality and integrity and meets required packaging standards.
- Collaborate with factory material handling & material flow engineering, manufacturing, safety & ergonomics teams to design, develop, and implement internal factory kitting & sequencing containers and carts.
- Conduct detailed business case studies comparing the use of returnable vs. expendable packaging for management reviews.
- Support new product launches by defining packaging requirements and analyzing logistics data to improve supply chain flow and reduce waste.
- Optimize packaging internal space utilization and material handling efficiency through advanced packaging engineering techniques.
- Lead continuous improvement projects focused on lean packaging and ergonomics, ensuring compliance with automotive industry packaging standards.
- Research and evaluate new materials and technologies to improve packaging durability, reduce weight, and lower costs. Identify reusability of materials to optimize cost.
- Manage the packaging buy-off process, ensuring that all packaging solutions meet the required specifications and standards before implementation.
- Conduct packaging performance testing, as needed, to ensure compliance with design standards.
What you bring to the team: - Bachelor's degree in Packaging, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering (Master's preferred).
- 5-8 years of packaging experience in automotive, aerospace, or similar high-volume industry.
- Proven experience in optimizing returnable and expendable packaging with suppliers, with a strong background in packaging material selection and durability testing.
- Proficient in CAD tools for packaging design and optimization, with experience in cost analysis, budgeting, and business case development.
- Deep knowledge of packaging design, materials, and logistics optimization.
- Familiarity with ISO, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Understanding of sustainable packaging practices and compliance standards.
