Key Responsibilities:
- Remote Substance Abuse Counseling: Conduct comprehensive substance use assessments (knowledge of ASAM criteria preferred), develop individualized treatment plans, and provide individual counseling focused on addiction, recovery, and co-occurring issues (within scope) via secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing.
- Relapse Prevention & Skill Building: Implement evidence-based relapse prevention strategies and assist clients in developing effective coping skills for managing triggers and cravings.
- Psychoeducation: Educate clients (and potentially families, with appropriate consent) about the nature of addiction, the recovery process, treatment options, and community resources.
- Clinical Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records in strict compliance with HIPAA, federal confidentiality regulations (42 CFR Part 2), state requirements, and ethical standards for addiction professionals.
- Ethical & Legal Compliance: Adhere rigorously to the NAADAC (National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) Code of Ethics, state licensing/certification board regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, and all other applicable laws.
- Client Communication: Communicate effectively and empathetically with clients regarding their treatment progress, goals, challenges, and expectations.
- Direct Fee Management: Establish your professional service fees and manage billing and payment collection directly with your clients.
Requirements:
- Education & Training: Minimum level of education (e.g., Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's) and specific substance use disorder training as required to obtain and maintain the necessary state credential (see below).
- Licensure/Certification: Must possess a current, active state-issued license or certification specifically authorizing the practice of substance abuse/addiction counseling (e.g., LADC, LCDC, CADC-II/III, MAC, or equivalent state credential). Your credential must permit independent or telehealth practice according to your state's regulations. Must understand and adhere to state scope of practice.
- Experience: Demonstrated post-credentialing experience providing direct substance abuse counseling services. Experience utilizing evidence-based practices (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT skills adapted for SUD) is strongly preferred.
- Telehealth Competency: Proficiency in using HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platforms and electronic record-keeping systems. Understanding of best practices for delivering addiction counseling via telehealth.
- Legal & Ethical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (heightened confidentiality for SUD records) , state laws and regulations governing addiction professionals and telehealth, and the NAADAC Code of Ethics.
- Professional Liability Insurance: Must maintain active professional liability (malpractice) insurance covering your scope of practice as a substance abuse counselor.
- Skills:
